Double Overhead

Double Overhead is a surfing term to reflect giant waves (2x human height). This is what I had in mind when attempting my first-ever mosaic Damascus, inspired by Reyn Spooner’s Molokai Channel fabric. Mosaic Damascus is a bit like sushi; you create a long roll containing your pattern, and then you slice it up and place the individual pieces face up, revealing its contents.

For this knife, I twisted a long bar of 15-layer Damascus, cut it into four blocks, and forge-welded it back together with larger layers of 1084 and 1075 (recycled from an old logger’s saw blade I found while hiking near my family cabin in Idaho). This was then cut and forge-welded face up (see sushi) to reveal the pattern that you see now. I fitted the handle with Curly Red Oak so the wood’s chatoyance could match the rippling of the waves.
